Levitating lamps: how do they actually work?

A magnetic field, not magic

It all happens in the base. It houses electromagnets driven by a small circuit that adjusts the magnetic field continuously, hundreds of times per second. The object above contains a magnet too. The system constantly balances attraction and repulsion — that ultra-fast adjustment is what keeps the piece stable in mid-air.

Why does it spin?

A slight asymmetry in the magnetic field creates a soft, steady rotation. The result: a hypnotic motion with no motor and no friction, that catches every eye.

How do you set it up?

Nothing complicated. Place the base on a flat, stable surface, plug it in, then slowly bring the object closer until it locks itself into the field. A few seconds is all it takes. Just avoid metal surfaces and sources of vibration.
